UU Board Responds to Police Incident at Purdue

The Board of Trustees of the Unitarian Universalist Church has approved this statement drafted by the Social Justice Committee and 8th Principle Task  Force.

The Social Justice Committee and the Board of Trustees of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Tippecanoe County call on members of Purdue University and the Greater Lafayette communities to build a beloved community where diversity is celebrated and everyone is valued.  As Unitarian Universalists, we believe in the inherent worth and dignity of every person.  Moreover, we affirm the need for justice, equity and compassion in human relations. We are saddened by the recent police incident on campus and stand with those who experienced traumatic interactions with the police.  We are painfully aware that the police are significantly more likely to use excessive force when arresting Black people. We hope that Purdue University and the Indiana State Police will conduct an unbiased investigation in their review of the recent incident on Purdue University's campus. In addition, we strongly support calls for the use of de-escalation techniques by the police and the increased utilization of trained therapists in responding to mental health and non-violent incidents.
